You Don't Have to Go to Italy This Summer

5 Underrated Cities in Europe

Ok — I said what I said.

It’s officially summer and everyone is flocking to Italy. Your entire social media feed looks the exact same. Let me guess — your feed is filled with colorful houses perched on the hills of Positano, people sipping rosé at the Piazzetta di Capri (and of course, pronouncing it “Cah-pri”), or the rolling hills of Tuscany where everyone is learning the difference between a Super Tuscan and a Montepulciano.

Don’t get me wrong — Italy is wonderful and magical. I will forever remember my first Italy trip. Because of that I will never discourage a client from visiting Italy. I don’t believe in sitting on my high horse and telling you, “oh puh-lease, don’t go to Italy, it’s just soooooo overcrowded and full of tourists these days.” The reality is that everyone should get to experience the magic of Italy, and it’s only going to get more crowded. Having already had the experience, it's easy for me to dismiss it.

This article is for the ones who keep going back to Italy. Again. And again. Look, I get it. But guess what? There’s a big, huge world out there. You do not need to keep going back to the safe place, revisiting the familiar. I started Flâner Travels because I want to empower and encourage people to travel the world confidently. I also want to do my part in reducing over-tourism. While I don’t have all the answers and acknowledge it's a complex issue, I want to educate people of the underdogs of Europe, the places you may overlook, thinking, “oh what could possibly be there?” Well, a lot more than you realize.
